Owls on a Necklace

November 4, 2011

My love of birds has led me to make necklaces with owl pendants. By rolling a small ball of clay in my hand and shaping it I created bird and owl beads. The beautiful texture and color on the birds was created by the flame and ash from the wood kiln. By throwing pieces of wood into the fire during the firing the wood turns into ash that melts onto the pottery. Each bird is different based on how much ash was dumped on it and how the flame swept across it. Above is a picture of the owls before they were fired and below is a picture of the pendants wood fired!

By adding ribbon I was able to turn the birds into necklaces. Wondering how to display my necklaces for the Craft Guild show I decided to make a stand out of the same materials I found in the “forest” by my apartment. The same stuff used for the bird stands created in the Tool Time post.  Plus it was create to take pictures with. My sister Robin is again responsible for these great pictures.
